Simple Sentence: A sentence with a subject and verb that expresses a complete thought. Does NOT have any dependent clauses. Can have a compound subject or verb.
Ex. Mrs. Simas enjoys listening to music by A Perfect Circle.
Maynard James Keenan sings and writes lyrics for A Perfect Circle and Tool.
Sub - Mrs. Simas
Verb - enjoys
Complete thought - Yes!
Dependent Clauses - No!
Sub - Maynard James Keenan
Verb - sings, writes
Complete thought - Yes!
Dependent Clauses - No!
Compound Sentence: Two simple sentences that are combined with a coordinating conjunction (FANBOYS) and a semi-colon or comma. Each simple sentence should have a sub and verb and express a complete thought. Thus, there should be a sub/verb on each side of the comma or semi-colon. No dependent clauses!
Ex. Maynard James Keenan is the lead singer of A Perfect Circle, and he lives in Arizona.
1st Simple Sentence: Maynard James Keenan is the lead singer of A Perfect Circle.
2nd Simple Sentence: He lives in Arizona.
Combined with the coordinating conjunction: and
Punctuation: comma
2 complete thoughts: Yes!
Dependent Clauses: No!
Complex Sentence: A simple sentence that has one or more dependent clauses attached to it.
Ex. A Perfect Circle created the song "3 Libras," which is Mrs. Simas' favorite.
Since the band is defunct, she will never get to see them in concert. =(
Simple Sentence: A Perfect Circle created the song "3 Libras."
Dependent Clause: which is Mrs. Simas' favorite
Simple Sentence: She will never get to see them in concert.

ReplyDeletethe quizes were easy until the you had to choose whether is was a simple, compound or complex. i had trouble telling some of the complex sentences apart from the others.

ReplyDeleteI took all of the quizzes and did relatively well. Even if I got some wrong, I was able to locate and correctmy mistakes. I'm glad that you posted these; alot of the ones with commands and questions were helpful.

Hey Mrs. Simas, This is sooo easy!!! I got 100% on almost of the quizzes. I just have one question. Is the sentence, "Because of rain, the baseball game was postponed." a simple sentence? I thought it was complex because of the world "because" but the quiz said I was wrong.

ReplyDeleteAnswer: Remember, clauses have verbs. "Because of the rain" does not have a verb, so it's not a clause! It's a phrase. So, there's no dependent clause in the sentence. It's a simple sentence. Thanks!

ReplyDeleteA complex sentence has a dependent clause. You have got to understand dependent clauses if you're going to find one in a sentence. You have got to memorize the words on your flower reference sheet; they will help you find a dependent clause in a sentence. There's really no other way I can say that.
ReplyDeleteA compound sentence doesn't have any dependent clauses at all. It is two simple sentences combined with a comma and conjunction or a semi-colon. A trick I use to tell a compound sentence is to look at the conjunction (FANBOYS). If there's a complete sentence on each side of the conjunction, then it's compound.

ReplyDeleteNot every sentence that has a conjunction like "and" is compound. Remember, there can be a compound verb or subject or whatever, BUT a compound sentence has to have two simple sentences combined.
